H Department & Center Departments Endocrinology and Metabolism

Endocrine and metabolism internal medicine

Major works done by this department (major diseases)

  • Hypophyseal diseases - acromegaly, failure to thrive,  prolactin-producing adenoma, Hypopituitarism, Hypophyseal tumor
  • Hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism,  thyroiditis, thyroid carcinoma and benign thyroid nodule
  • Osteoporosis, disorders of calcium metabolism (parathyroid dysfunction), bone metabolic diseases
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Secondary hypertension, Cushing's syndrome, hypoadrenalism, adrenal tumor
  • Menopausal disorder, amenorrhea
  • Obesity, hyperlipidemia

Information on major tests and procedures

  • Tests for the thyroid - blood test, radioactive iodine uptake, thyroid scan, ultrasonography , thyroid cytology and biopsy
  • Regular diabetes mellitus checkups – As a test that can be conducted easily at home, urine glucose levels can be checked using a tape. Nowadays, there are blood sugar self-measuring devices wherein the fingertip is pricked to get blood to know blood sugar values accurately.
The tests are conducted 4 times a day; if blood sugar (or urine glucose) levels are measured before breakfast (07:00), before lunch (11:00), before dinner (17:00), and before sleeping (22:00) for several days, a certain shape will appear. If this pattern is known, diabetes mellitus control thereafter will become very easy.
  • Insulin injection therapy – In the case of Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus patients with some insulin secreted, intermediate-type insulin whose effect is maintained around 24 hours or mixed-type insulin combining intermediate-type insulin and short acting insulin is injected once a day before breakfast.
In the case of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus patients or non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus patients who should control blood sugar well (e.g., pregnancy, after major surgery, or in the case of severe infectious diseases), active therapy is done wherein insulin is injected at least 2~3 times a day or insulin pump (artificial pancreas) is used.
